Life is Not Over After Going Through a DivorceYou just got divorced and feel incredibly depressed. The sadness that comes with leaving one situation and moving into the unknown can be borderline debilitating. Maybe you are older and are scared to death about being alone for the rest of your life. Perhaps you haven’t worked in 20 years and have no idea how to support yourself financially.

If you feel like an abject failure, you aren’t alone. However, realize that it is not rational to think like this and these feelings will pass in due time! Learn how to keep going after a divorce and use these tips on staying strong after a divorce so you can live the life you always wanted to live.

  1. Take it one day at a time and remember that this too shall pass. The only way to keep going through a divorce is to remember that everything is temporary. The stress of meeting with lawyers, explaining to your children that you’re leaving, or finding a new career will ease within time. Try not to overwhelm yourself with thinking about all of the things you need to get done. Write a list for each day if need be and complete the tasks on that list. Recognize that the world won’t end because you have a bad day or a bad week. You will feel better and learn how to cope after a divorce.
  1. You will get a fresh new start. New starts can be scary, which is why so many people stay in bad marriages. However, a new start can also be exciting, if you perceive it to be as such. Think of the change as an amazing new opportunity to rebuild yourself after a divorce. You get to start fresh and create a brand new life, perhaps one that you have always imagined. Yes, it is frightening to go through change, but it is better than staying miserable in your safe little world.
  1. You can learn from the experience. You may feel like you wasted a lot of time in your marriage and wish that you had moved on more quickly. Perhaps you feel like you are older now and less likely to meet someone who is compatible with you. You know whom to turn to after a divorce. Let those people who are important to you in your life guide you and comfort you so you’ll be able to learn from the experience you went through.

Also, you can discover who it is you truly are and what you want out of life in the future. Perhaps you can use the experience to know what kind of partner you are looking for, and how you can better yourself in order to feel fulfilled and satisfied. You will realize over time why you needed your divorce, and that it is truly a blessing, despite the stress that it can cause. You will learn that you can figure out how to cope after a divorce, and that the stress and anxiety you feel now is only temporary.

Change is difficult for everyone involved. Nobody likes to leave the unknown and move on to something new. Regardless of how fearful you are that your life might be over after your divorce, just know that your fears are not based in reality. Think of the positives that will come from a brand new life, and set realistic goals to achieve your dreams. Take one day at a time and move forward by surrounding yourself with loved ones who will be supportive in every way.
